Spent the last day of winter driving nine hours, mostly through rain hoping to find Sandhill cranes at the end.

My friend, Jimmie, actually did the driving. I was in charge of navigation.  Wasn’t too hard. Only two real turns the whole day. Right turn off I-70 onto I-29 and then a left on I-80 about two hours later.  Have to admit the right turn onto I-29 was a little tense but we managed.

About 90 minutes after that second turn we were either bored with the interstate or excited about finding the birds so about 40 miles from the goal we made the third turn of the day to find some gravel.. Gravel roads in rain are always fun as some of you already know.  However almost immediately Immediately we saw a few cranes.  Could not believe our good fortune but with the superb navigation I provided how could we have missed.

Over the next two hours we saw hundreds of cranes. The only thing was that when we rolled the windows down to get a better look, the rain blew in.  Got to love a road trip.
