Never a bad day on the river…and some are just outstanding

Just getting back from another road trip this spring, I have been busy.  It wasn’t planned, but I returned to some of the places the Princess and I found last fall up in Wisconsin.  It was six months ago we traveled north to get out of the heat and to see some fall colors which were late in arriving in our hometown.  The further we drove north the deeper into fall we went.  This trip I started out in late spring with my son’s godfather and drove north into very early spring at Eau Claire.  I am easily amused at times and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the progression of the season during the seven eight-hour drive.

Yep, he caught another one

Hunter Dorn from Wisconsin Fly Fishing Co. was our guide for the two days on the rivers. (www.wisconsinflyfishingcompany.com)  We were there on the season opening day.  The weather could easily have been wet and cold like it was a few days before our arrival but it turned out perfect.  Blue skies and warm sun.  The Black River was running a little high but it did not take long for Hunter to put us on fish the first day.

The Smallmouth Bass were larger than expected and very aggressive.  After the first fish landed, we traded out my favorite 5wt for a heavier 7wt rod.  The fish were just a little too big for my rig.  We were having fun.

The second day on the Red Cedar river we had to work a lot harder for the fish but it was still a good day.  We both managed to catch a Striped Bass.  Another first for me.

My son’s godfather and I have a history of long dives and short fishing trips.  Usually there is more time in the car than on the river but worth it.  I am already looking forward to the next adventure and opportunity to find some new water.
